Research Background

My research has focused on four distinct areas. First, I have a continuing interest in leadership, particularly with respect to the role of leadership in self-managing teams and the nature of the relationship between leaders and followers. Second, I am interested in fundamental questions about the nature of work, which includes how work is structured and how people perceive their work. I have explored these issues in a series of studies in the job analysis, work design, and work teams areas. Third, I have studied the effectiveness and consequences of different selection techniques. Fourth, I have explored issues of theory development and sought to produce integrative research in the substantive research areas noted above.

I have published nearly 90 articles and book chapters in numerous Management and Psychology journals including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, American Psychologist, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology.

A number of these articles have won or have been nominated for awards including, outstanding article of the year, most frequently read article of the year, most highly cited article of the year, and best paper of the year.
