Overview

Frederick P. Morgeson is the Eli Broad Professor of Management in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. As an industrial and organizational psychologist (Ph.D., Purdue University), he studies how organizations can optimally identify, select, develop, manage, and retain talent to achieve their strategic goals. With more than two decades of experience, Dr. Morgeson has conducted award-winning research, taught, and consulted across a range of topics in the human resource management and talent management domain, including recruiting and hiring; leadership experiences and development; team leadership and performance; organizational development; and job analysis and design. This includes working with numerous public and private-sector organizations across a range of industries, with particular emphasis on high-risk and healthcare industries. Prior to joining Michigan State University, Dr. Morgeson was a faculty member in the Management Department at Texas A&M University and a manager of a recording studio in the Detroit area.

Research

As one of the most prolific and highly cited scholars in the world, Dr. Morgeson’s research has been ground-breaking and pioneering. This includes influential research on how work can be designed to impact multiple individual and organizational outcomes, the efficacy of different recruiting and hiring techniques, the unique and challenging demands of team leadership, and the development of Event System Theory. He has published over 90 articles and chapters in leading management and psychology journals and co-authored the leading job analysis book (Job and Work Analysis: Methods, Research, and Applications for Human Resource Management (3rd ed.)), with this research cited over 30,000 times. He has presented at universities and conferences around the world and has earned many awards for his research, including numerous best paper awards, citations, and nominations, the Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution from the American Psychological Association, and the Withrow Endowed Teacher-Scholar and Endowed Emerging Scholar Awards from the Eli Broad College of Business. He has been awarded Fellow status from leading professional associations, including the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Dr. Morgeson has worked with over 130 public and private sector organizations spanning a diverse set of industries, including healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, military, and governmental agencies. Recent engagements include U.S. Army Research Institute, Department of Defense, NASA, Social Security Administration, H.W. Kaufman Group, and HealthcareSource.

Teaching

Routinely among the highest-rated teachers, Dr. Morgeson is also an award-winning educator, having taught in-person and online courses at all levels, including the executive, doctoral, masters, and undergraduate levels. These classes have revolved around human resource management, talent management, and leadership development and focus on innovative and engaging ways to leverage the science to improve both organizational and individual student outcomes. For example, Dr. Morgeson received multiple Instructor Excellence Awards for the Executive MBA program from the Broad College and the Faculty Excellence Award from Michigan State University’s Executive MBA Class of 2018. In addition, he developed two award-winning courses in the full-time MBA and undergraduate programs. Leading Responsibility was a core MBA course designed to enable students to explore their own personal leadership identity, values, traits, and style; understand how leaders can influence an organization’s culture, particularly as it relates to responsibility and sustainability; and provide an introduction to issues of organizational responsibility and the challenges associated with understanding and addressing the priorities of a diverse set of organizational stakeholders. Leadership and Team Management was an experiential elective MBA course and a required undergraduate Management capstone course in which MBA students select, develop, and lead teams of undergraduate management students through an interactive series of team-based challenges. These courses won two Lewis Quality Awards from the Eli Broad College of Business and Leadership and Team Management was a finalist for the Academy of Management’s Human Resources Division Innovative Teaching Award.

In addition, Dr. Morgeson partnered with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) to redesign their flagship Executive Education teams program, “Leading Teams for Impact.” This program has been in place for the past 10 years and is structured around a conceptual team and leadership model Dr. Morgeson developed during his sabbatical at CCL. This model is summarized in CCL’s Handbook of Leadership Development and Dr. Morgeson is the only non-CCL affiliated lead author ever to publish a chapter in the handbook.

Professional Service

Dr. Morgeson is a leader in the field of management, having held key leadership positions within the university, professional associations, and broader academic community. For example, he founded and currently serves as Editor of the Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior, a journal devoted to publishing leading scholarly reviews that are relevant for academics and practitioners alike. This journal has become one of the most impactful in the management and psychology domains. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Psychology Review. Previously, Dr. Morgeson served as Editor and Associate Editor of Personnel Psychology, a top-tier management and psychology journal.

Dr. Morgeson served as Chair of the Academy of Management Human Resources Division as part of his five-year term as elected Executive Officer. This Division leadership role included determining strategic objectives, delegating responsibilities to Executive Committee members, representing the Division’s nearly 3,500 members to external groups, and conducting and writing the Division’s 5-year review. Previously, he was an elected member of the HR Division Executive Committee where, among other things, he organized and led the annual doctoral consortium. He has also served on the SHRM Foundation Board of Directors, taking the lead in commissioning and editing the Effective Practice Guidelines series of practitioner-focused research summaries.

Among his many leadership roles within Michigan State University, Dr. Morgeson completed two terms as Chair of the Undergraduate Programs Committee which is responsible for the oversight and management of all undergraduate programs in the Broad College. During his tenure, Dr. Morgeson led a review and revision of the Assurance of Learning (AOL) process which is being redesigned to better assess student competency development. This work continued on the AOL Task Force, a committee chaired by Dr. Morgeson to build-out and implement the new AOL process. For this work, the Assessment of Learning Task Force won a Lewis Quality Award.

Finally, Dr. Morgeson is a highly-respected thought leader who has been featured in national and international media publications, including ABC News, Bloomberg Businessweek, Business Insider, National Public Radio, Reuters, and Wall Street Journal, sharing his insights on human resource management, leadership, and more.
