More Details on MGT460 and MGT840

Management 460 (Management Capstone) is an undergraduate management major capstone course and Management 840 (Leadership and Team Management) is an MBA elective in which MBA students actually put together their own team (composed of undergraduate management students) and then lead them through a series of tasks using a high fidelity, networked command and control computer simulation in the Team Effectiveness Teaching Laboratory. The class structure consists of one lecture and one lab day per week. The lecture material is directly tied to the lab experience, such that what is discussed in class is then applied that week in lab. This allows for conceptual understanding followed by application. In the subsequent lecture session, students share their experiences (through a facilitated discussion) and objective performance and survey feedback is provided.

These are experience-based courses, with dual emphasis on learning leading-edge actionable management knowledge and then applying that knowledge in a dynamic environment. In essence, students “learn by doing”. In the spirit of autonomy that often accompanies the use of teams in organizations, the student experience in class depended directly on their own behavior, the behavior of their classmates, and the behavior of their team. Students became highly involved and meaningfully participate.

For MBA students, the course provides them the opportunity to get hands on experience in all aspects of managing a team, from assessing potential subordinates, to recruiting and selecting a team, to training and developing their capabilities, to leading and providing feedback to them about their performance over the semester. For Undergraduate students, the course provides them opportunity for them to get hands on experience working in a highly interdependent team setting, learn about team leadership, and be involved in all aspects of team formation, development, and performance.

I used to teach MGT315, MGT411, and MGT810.
