More Details on MBA806 - Leading Responsibly

Organizations are increasingly recognizing the value of operating in a responsible and sustainable manner toward its diverse stakeholders. Central to any responsible or sustainable actions are the values, preferences, and behaviors of an organization’s leadership. Thus, to understand how an organization can act in a responsible and sustainable manner, it is necessary to first understand the role of organizational leaders in helping to achieve these outcomes.

MBA806 focuses on cross-functional topics pertaining to the nature of organizational leadership, ethical behavior, and social responsibility. As such, it integrates a wide variety of management research and practice to help bolster a student's leadership skills whatever his or her functional area. The purpose of this course is to (1) explore a student's own personal leadership identity, values, traits, and style in order to understand the impact one has on others, (2) examine how leaders can influence an organization’s culture, particularly as it relates to responsibility and sustainability, and (3) provide an introduction to issues of organizational responsibility and the challenges associated with understanding and addressing the priorities of a diverse set of organizational stakeholders.

In this class, we ponder, discuss, and debate the following questions:

  • What is leadership?
  • What is responsibility?
  • What is the responsibility of business?
  • Who are businesses responsible to?
  • How can business balance the competing demands of different stakeholders?
This course won a 2010 Lewis Quality Award, which is an annual award given to individuals, organizations, work teams, or cross-functional teams within the Broad School that engage in innovative activities to further the mission of the Broad School.

In the past I have taught MGT315, MGT411, MGT460, MGT810, MGT840, and MGT909.
